Checking Off My 2017 Resolutions – Status Update

I am one of those cheesy people who makes a big long list of resolutions every year.

New Year Resolutions get a lot of negative press, probably because a lot of people seem to think about this on January 1, and then forget for the next 364 days of the year.

Yet, I am still a firm believer in the tradition, and I don’t see anything wrong with writing down some goals. But how do you get yourself to actually work on achieving these goals? Physically write them down and post them somewhere you will see almost every day. Mine are posted on a big cork board in our living room, which is where I tend to spend the most time in my apartment. Trust me, it helps.

So, today is July 12, 2017. I am a bit more than halfway through the year, so I’m checking in on my list. I have a long list, so bear with me. Some are fitness related, some are business related, and others are just personal activities or changes I want to make.

ACHIEVED:

Goal: Personal Trainer Job

I’m happy to say I am now an employed personal trainer at Fisique in downtown Boston. I have 3 steady clients at the moment, who I train multiple times a week after my full-time job. It has definitely been an adjustment with my schedule being so full, but I absolutely love it. My clients are wonderful and (most of the time) are excited to be working out with me. I can truly say it is everything I hoped for, and I can’t wait to keep growing my business and help more people!

Goal: Website Updated and Running

Well if you’re reading this, this one pretty much speaks for itself 🙂

Goal: Tough Mudder / Spartan Race

I completed my first Spartan Sprint in June, in just over 2 hours (It was a little under 5 miles). Definitely not as fast of a time as I was hoping for, but it felt amazing crossing over that finish line and getting the medal. This has been a goal of mine for a while, and will definitely not be a one-time experience 🙂 Looking forward to doing another Sprint, or maybe a Super in the near future!

STILL TO DO:

There are definitely more to-do goals than there are achieved goals. But hey, I still have half the year left! Here’s what I have left to do:

Goal: Summit 10 Mountains

This was originally hike 10 mountains, but I realized that was overreaching a bit for my schedule. So the mission is now to be on the top of 10 mountains this year 🙂 So far, we have done the Franconia Ridge Loop in New Hampshire, hitting the tops of Mount Lafayette, Haystack, and Lincoln. So 7 more to go!

Goal: Read 12 Books

Due to an increased amount of time spent on the train recently, this has been an easier goal to achieve than I expected. So far I have read 7 out of the 12, so I am right on track!

What I read:

  1. Alter of Eden – James Rollins
  2. Kite Runner – Khaled Hosseini
  3. Timeline – Michael Crichton
  4. Ice Hunt – James Rollins
  5. Handmaiden’s Tale – Margaret Atwood
  6. The Life We Bury – Allen Eskens
  7. Into the Water – Paula Hawkins

I am currently reading Sphere by Michael Crichton. I have 4 more to go after that so please let me know if you have any recommendations!

Goal: Be Less Attached to My Phone

I do better with this goal some times than others. I have gotten good at leaving my phone in my bag or put away when I am spending time with people, which was one of the first habits I wanted to break. I like the idea of going off the grid for a few days more often, or just finding other ways to entertain myself when I am bored. As someone trying to build an online business, it is easy to spend too much time on social media like Instagram or Snapchat. So I will continue to work on this goal!
Goal: 16% Body Fat

I have been focusing more on performance lately rather than aesthetics, so this goal has been put on the back-burner for now. I am feeling really good working on becoming a more well-rounded athlete and increasing my muscle endurance. I am considering starting to cut again at the end of the month, so I will keep you guys updated on that 🙂

Goal: Be More Mentally and Physically Flexible / Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff / Give Less F***s

These goals kind of go together so I am grouping them (the last one recommended by my wonderfully honest boyfriend :p ). I tend to get worked up about little things that are not worth stressing about, so it is something I like to remind myself to work on.

Mentally: This is something I constantly need to work on. I tend to be a bit OCD and I am definitely a schedule-dependent person. But I have been making a conscious effort to be more open to spontaneity and adjusting my plan to make room for the spur of the moment decisions. This will probably be a goal of mine every year.

As far as physically flexible, this is a good time for me to admit I have been slacking in this department. I have been better about making time to stretch after workouts, but it is still pretty short. I think its time to start planning some more stretching and flexibility exercises into my routine.

Goal: West Coast/Rockies Trip

We’re going to Colorado in October! WOOO!

Goal: 30 Days of Yoga

This is a YouTube program by Yoga with Adriene. I have not begun it yet, but I still have hope for this year!

Goal: Go to a Red Sox/Bruins/Celtics Game

As a Bostonian, I have an absurd amount of access to amazing sports teams. And I have not been taking as much advantage of it as I should be. I went to a Red Sox game in June, so I just have the Bruins and Celtics left!

Climb a 5.12 / Lead 5.11 / Boulder V6+

Climbing has not gotten enough time in my schedule lately. With me working 2 jobs and spending a lot of time with weights and cardio, it seems to have fallen to the side. I am working on trying to figure out a way to adjust my schedule to make up for it, but will keep pushing hard when I do get time to go!

SECOND HALF OF 2017

So there’s where I’m at so far with my year. I still have a lot of work to do, but I have plenty of time.

Even if you did not make a list of goals in January, make one now! It does not need to be January 1 to write down a plan to improve parts of your life. Check in with yourself once in a while, and think of some small changes that can help guide you towards completing that goal. Stay focused, stay motivated, and keep grinding 🙂
